We’re all born not knowing much of anything except dependence. If your anything like I was growing up, you early on starting fighting for independence. As I think back to being a child and a teenager…
If your wondering what my childhood has to do with goals or time management, stick with me, I do have a point here.
…one of the things I remember vividly is looking my poor mother in the face as she was talking to me (what I saw as lecturing at the time) shaking my head “yes” agreeing with her but thinking in my head “she has no idea what she’s talking about.” Yep, there’s a little insight into the early mindset of Daveda. I gave my Mama a run for her money a few times…
Then we grow up…and realize that there’s a whole lot of skill and wisdom necessary to be accomplished and successful. I always saw people that seemed to be so on top of things and thought
“They must be wired different then me, because I don’t know HOW to be like that.”
GOOD NEWS! If you can relate to that, there are skills that can be practiced and learned to help you be more on top of things.
I may not be the worlds MOST organized person, however, I have learned a few things about setting goals and time management over the years that might help you in your life and your business.
First thing you have to realize is that taking the steps necessary to learn these skills is MORE THAN WORTH YOUR TIME AND EFFORT! Then you have to make a conscience decision to stick to it.
This is the backbone of success with out feeling like your in a million different places.
Now that I think of it, these are most likely some of skills that my mom was trying to teach when she tried to get me to be organized or to stay on task…Thanks Mom 😉 your efforts were not in vein.
What I have learned is priceless!
We loosely throw around the word “goals” as if just because we say it, that will make it happen…NOT SO MUCH! We cannot just wish our goals into existence.
When you set goals, you have to have a plan of action on how you are going to accomplish that goal. First and foremost you must WRITE THEM DOWN.
You have to have your goals in front of you daily. You have to look at them and then set your time, your tasks and your priorities to align with your goals.
Otherwise….chances are…you won’t reach them…
Goal setting and time management have to hold hands through out the day, one cannot be accomplished without the other unless you want to feel like your loosing your mind…trust me, I’ve been there.
The one most important piece of advice I can give you, is this…
PLAN YOUR DAY….don’t just let the chips fall where they may.
I have developed a routine that helps me tremendously and a routine will help you as well. Start your day the same way everyday. For me it looks like this…
I get up by 7:00am, I am not a super big fan of really early morning, so this works for me.
I come to the kitchen and start my cup of coffee.
I then set a timer for 30 minutes and I spend that time in personal development. For me that’s filling up on Jesus and reading.
After that I spend 15 minutes writing down what things for that day need to be done and I prioritize them. Sometimes I have already started doing this the night before as well, so I look at my notes and plan my day. I also use an App for my iphone that helps, its called Toodledo. You can put all of the days priorities in and it allows you to separate them according to importance.
The rest of my day varies depending on what I have to do that day to help me reach my next goal. I’m a homeschooling and a work from home Mom, so I have to make sure that my hours are spent giving the most of me to both areas. But, the one thing that I ALWAYS do no matter what the day looks like is I take on the hardest, most challenging or most time consuming task FIRST. This way, I don’t procrastinate and put things off for tomorrow, that could just be done today.
Your routine does not have to look just like mine, but that’s what the first hour of my day looks like every morning at least 5 days per week.
This is a far cry from what my days used to look like.
I used to just get up and start doing something…I was busy all day and I would go to bed wondering “I was busy all day, but what did I accomplish today?”
So, if your anything like me, just know that you can learn the skills necessary to be a goal setting, time management, priority making Super Star! 😉
Most importantly, ask God who gives wisdom and He will direct you.
You can have this too! With a little time and dedication these are skills ANYONE can develop!
“If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproach or fault finding, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 AMP
