Is there such a thing as a Good Christian or a Bad Christian?
We all have a couple pet peeves, right? I’m no different. One of mine is hearing people say “He/she is not a good Christian” or ” He/She is a really good Christian” There is no such thing as a good Christian or a bad Christian. All believers have the evidence of sin and redemption in their lives in some way, it just shows up differently from person to person. So, why is it fair that we get to pass judgement on a condition that God can only truly access from the heart?
What we see on the outside of people is only what we see. Just because someone serves at a church 20 hours a week, or leads the ladies bible study, doesn’t necessarily make them “good”. Likewise, just because someone has a mouth like a sailor or doesn’t serve at a church at all, doesn’t make them “bad”. What it makes them is human.
We all start at different places on this journey and no one deserves to be judged based on where we think they should be on their journey with God. There are people who do good things and have good hearts and there are people who do bad things and have bad hearts. However, saying someone is a good or bad Christian is, in my opinion, is not our call. When we say yes to Jesus, our Spirit is what changes first and it takes time for the evidence to show on the outside.
I know, your thinking, “Daveda, the Bible says we will know them by their fruits.” Yep, it does in Matthew 7:16-19. These scriptures are talking about false prophets who are claiming to know the Lord yet, are not teaching His truth in love. We must be cautious of taking these scriptures and using them as a weapon against people who don’t seem to be as “good” as we think they should be or as a way to put others up on a pedastal based on what they do not who they are.
Genuine fruit of the spirit is a matter of the heart that will flow into the actions in a persons life. The fruit of the spirit is also developed as we grow in relationship with God. No one becomes a Christian and reaches maturity, right away, or ever for that matter. The Holy Spirit is continually at work in us. We are all in the process of growing into who God created us to be.
“But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].” Galatians 5:22-23
My point is, we don’t have the right to look at what we see on the outside of a persons life and label them a “good or bad Christian”. Only God truly sees the heart.
God loves you with an everlasting love and He will never give up on you. He loves everyone this way.
Bottom Line: Don’t judge a Christian by his/her cover; take the time to look inside and give others the same grace that God gives you.
